So, we will be getting our silver baby hopefully sometime this Sunday, which is good. It gives my boyfriend and I plenty of time to get our home ready for him.

With that said, the breeder provided a mini list of things that they currently have their bengals in the habit of doing. Their litter box is a giant, 10 gallon tote. On top of that, they fill it with wood pellets.. and I quote.. "the kind you burn in wood stoves." and this is what throws me off. They mention a place that sells it, but them being in a completely different state up North and myself being down South, we do not have that store here.. and we also do not have the Premium Wood Pellets that they use for litter. I know it's best to try and stick with the things they're used to, but I don't know what to use as a litter now. I've also NEVER in my life used Wood Pellets as a litter for any of my cats, so I'm just confused really. I don't want to throw kitty off with some random, grainy litter and he ends up pooping and peeing wherever he wants.

Does anyone use a wood pellet brand that they can recommend? Something that I can just.. get at a pet store or off the internet. (Yes, I tried to find their brand of wood pellets on the internet. Nothing.)

It looks like they sell pellet litter at the big box cat stores. I’d just get it ther (for now).

When I got my oriental, it was the same story as yours... she was used to using wood pellets at the chattery, and me never having used them before. So I diligently tried to use them (the breeder gave me a small supply) for like 2 or 3 days before saying “screw it” and pouring out all the wood pellets and replacing them with “regular” litter. It worked, she didn’t miss a beat. Your mileage may definitely differ though, every cat is different and has peculiarities, but personally I think it’s worth the risk to see if your new kitty will use convention litter.

While it is always best to continue with what the breeder has used, many bengal owners switch to something a little easier to use. I don't know that it would be difficult to switch to a cat litter. My recommendation is to get a second litter box and use the type of litter you want. Introduce your boy to that box as he would still have the wood pellets to use. If he shows an interest in the new litter box and uses it, you can get rid of the wood pellets. Most cats don't care the size of type of litter box -- except one may prefer hooded or open. If your baby wants an open box, you can get whatever would be large enough for him to turn around in to cover the waste. Know it's always nice to have two litter boxes for your kitty. We have two and Raiden makes use of both of them.

Good luck with your boy and enjoy the adventures.

Don't worry about it. My breeder said the same thing. They use that because they have multiple kittens/cats.

I brought my kitten home and first thing I did when I walked into the house was put him in the litter box which was filled with Dr. Elsey's Cat Ultra Premium Clumping Cat Litter. He has never missed the box. I like the brand because it clumps very well and is easy to clean.

Since then I've tried ARM & HAMMER Clump & Seal Platinum Litter. It too clumps well and also has a nice scent. He doesn't seem to care too much about brand.

Two things that I have learned in the few weeks since I have Jagger.

1. When you first add more new litter, expect paw prints for a day. It's dusty in the beginning. You can reduce the dust trail it a mat. I found this one to be very good. Amazon: Pawkin Cat Litter Mat
2. I purchased the Litter Genie. It was $10 on Amazon. Now they sell the Litter Genie Plus which is a bit larger. It works. Never any smell and very convenient next to the litter box ( never flush clumping litter down the toilet). You can get the knock-off brand refill bags cheaper and they last long.

Good luck with your new kitten.

I think one potential pitfall in using clumping litter is going overboard on scented litter. Absolutely do whatever works, and it’s always more pleasant for a human to smell some flowery smell then to smell piss or poop, but also remember that for cats their #1 sense is smell, so if your cat starts rejecting the box, that can be a pretty likely reason. You have to imagine what some of those scents would smell like if your nose was only inches from it, and if your sense of smell was nearly 10x stronger than ours. I wouldn’t probably use such a litter box myself under those circumstances!

Thanks guys!

The wood pellets honestly would've ruined my dream to own one of those super expensive robot litter boxes since they require a clumping litter (lol. ONE DAY!) but I'll probably just not use the giant ass 10 gallon tote (I think that's so weird, but like someone said, maybe because of multiple cats) and use a clumping litter and have an 'extra' litter box with the weirdo wood pellets in it and see what happens. As long as they can cover their piss and doodoo, right? I wouldn't even begin to understand how wood pellets would even handle peepee and doodoo as far as sticking together. Anyway, thanks again!

Remember, the litter box is for the convenience of the CAT, not the human. LOL. It may take a few hits and misses to find what works for you, but you will find it. There are unscented litters. I use Clump And Seal for multiple cats and I don't even notice is there is a fragrance in there and my bengal uses the litter boxes fine.

If you have other cats, the rule of thumb for litter boxes is one per cat, plus one extra. But, it never hurts to have two boxes if you have one cat, especially if you live on multi levels or have a particularly large home. If you can get your baby to use a type of litter and things are fine, dump the wood pellets and refill with the regular litter and all should be well.
