I picked up my beautiful Bengal yester day and she is gorgeous. Literally within a few hours of me getting her home I noticed that the fur on her spine looked slightly greasy. Today the fur down just her spine is deforested like a greasy look but it still feels soft. She is eating fine and acting lively and well. I have kept her on the same food as the breeder did she has only just been flead and she has only been in one room of the house. Does anybody know what could have caused this greasy look. It is only slight and I can’t see it being anything major could it potentially be just the change in environment or because she has been drinking tap water. I’m not sure how sensitive their coats and they are but I know that a greasy coat means something isn’t right. I will try and put a pic up so you can see.

Unfortunately it won’t let me upload a pic but basically her fur is depressed with a greasy look alomg her spine and I’m baffled as to why as I am being if anything over carseful with her and I’m quite upset that something is wrong with her already.

Hi. Thank you yes I am going to get let insistence I am just looking into the best one and am purchasing tomorrow or later today.

I’ve checked her there’s no wound. She isn’t itching or anything it’s just literally a bit of greasy fur along spine.

There is a difference between "looking" greasy and "feeling" greasy. I agree with Brian that it is best to take your kitten to the vet for a full check up. Many breeder contracts stipulate this be done within 72 hours of your getting the cat. This will also start a medical record on your kitty for future reference.

I'm guessing your kitten is grooming itself just fine. I will say, there are times when my bengal's coat on the very top of his back looks greasy but it is not. Right now, it looks normal as he is laying right next me.

It's good that you are keeping on the same diet as the breeder. Diet change can cause changes in the pelt of the bengal. You may not have anything to worry about. But, a trip to the vet can put your mind at ease.

Please let us know what the vet says.

I took her to the vet and she is healthy, gaining weight and she hasn’t got fleas

Possibly the change in temperature and environment have brought this on and simply it’s not greasy just longer in places. She does feel fluffier elsewhere so I’m hoping it’s as simple as that as I’m puzzled. The vet said to shampoo it well and let it dry so I’m going to try that when I find a suitable shampoo

Awesome! Well done. It sounds like from the "shampoo" suggestion, the vet may think it's just something that got onto her fur? If so, that's awesome news.

Pet stores sell special shampoos for cats. Just look in the cat grooming section. Some bengals are known to love water, so it may be an interesting experience with possibly her first contact with water? Good luck, let us know how it goes.

You were never able to upload a photo. You didn't say how old your kitty is. If your vet wasn't overly concerned, then I don't know that you should be. I'm guessing the fuzzy stage was gone. Shampooing a cat isn't easy and since they groom themselves, the shampoo must be completely removed. I don't know if there is a dry type of shampoo for cats. I would probably just leave it for a while and see what happens. Winter coats transition slowly.

Yes I did find shampoo and it went for like a minute then came back. She seems to be looking like her coat is thicker now rather than greasy. For example when I see other bengals you can hardly tell they have fur. They almost look so smooth and sleek that it looks like their skin almost. My kitten looks fluffy and it’s not kitten fuzz I don’t tho k it’s more like a thicker coat. She is 14 weeks old. Has any one else experienced this when their cat got a enter coat?? I had a Bengal kitten many years ago and she died at 10 months so I am very protective over this one bit at the same time I don’t want to be going to the vets every 5 minutes
