Hey All, I'm chasing some advice regarding adding Bicarbonate soda to my boys litter tray.
I have 2 high sided storage containers as litter trays (50 litre / 13 gallon) filled with 5kg (11 pounds) of non-clumping clay litter. I scoop every day, and completely replace and clean once per week. Given it is non-clumping the urine naturally soaks some of the clay. When I scoop the poop I make sure to move the saturated litter around to dry a bit, but in the hot summer here in Australia, at around day 5 it's getting a little pungent.
The easy solution would be to change the litter every 5 days, but since I'm also a creature of habit, it's easier to remember to change it every week on the day the garbage truck comes.
I've read that adding Bicarb soda to the tray can help with the smell factor, but I'm also reading conflicting reports about it's safety for my boys. I'm always going to do what's best for them, so if I have to just go with completely changing out the litter every 5 days in summer so be it.
They haven't rejected using the litter when it gets a little smelly, but come on......if I can smell it, imagine what it must smell like to them!
Can anyone shed some light?

I used to use a cat litter containing baking soda. I don't think there is anything wrong with using it.

I was going to say they make cat litter with baking soda and I know a cat rescue that uses boxes of baking soda in all their litter boxes, so I really think it is fine. I'm not sure what the best ratio would be, but you might want to try a little and see if that helps and if the odor is still there, add even more. Baking soda is really cheap here in the States. As long as you don't confuse it with baking powder! LOL

When I first got my bengals, they had a bout with, probably Giardia, so every time they did a poo it stunk up the whole room. I got some de-wormer medicine from the vet, which eventually solved the problem, but in the mean time I used some of those baking-soda additives, and it really helped to make the space livable for me
