There are dwarves in other breeds that cause the animal to be a smaller version than normal. Some of those too cause health issues. For example pituitary dwarfism. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm ... 30&aid=868
There are also people deliberately breeding from smaller and smaller animals to get a small version of the breed. In those cases the animal is perfectly proportioned only smaller.

The Munchkin is an achondroplastic animal and as such there are lots of different abnormalities associated, not only short legs.

Interesting. I'm not a huge fan of munchkin cats but I can see these getting popular. They're like the weiner dog of cats...lol.

Unfortunately, many years ago these 'freaks of nature' were exhibited in circuses, where folk with a curiousity for the abnormal would pay to go and view them.

Even more unfortunately, these freaks of nature have now become freaks of man-kind who will always find someone willing to pay to possess one of these as a 'talking point' regardless of the fact they were created from a genetic fault that may limit their ability to lead a normal life as a cat and makes them more vulnerable in many ways.

I think it is a case of educating people NOT to buy these cats and it should be made clear that they are actually the result of a genetic fault, that could also lead to other serious defects when these cats are bred to similar others.

There is always someone out to make a quick buck, and sadly there is also always some idiot willing to part with money to fund their excercise.
