Hi I wondered if anyone out there could help me.

I want to know how I can check my kitten's pedigree.
Because I bought him as a pet I do not have his full pedigree, it will be sent to me either when he is neutered or I pay the difference between the pet price & the price to put him on TICA's active register. The breeder is happy for him to be put on active, he was originally advertised as "pet but can be put on active"
I have contacted the breeder who has given me the names of his sire & dam & their parents.
I have had a look on Bengalpedigrees.com but I cannot find his parents.
It looks to me as if the information on there is put on voluntairily by owners or breeders.
I have found his grandfather but his sire isn't listed.
Is there any way of checking with TICA?

The sire is not mentioned on the breeder's website, the only thing I can find online for him is an advert for someone else's kittens that says he is their sire.
The dam is listed on the breeder's website but I can't find anything else about her anywhere.
I have found her sire's info on Bengal classifieds as he is listed as the sire of an available stud & the grandparent of someone else's kittens that are for sale.

I want to check his pedigree against my little girls & make sure they are not related anywhere & to check for any info on health testing. Then I will be able to make an informed decision on whether or not to put him onto active & get him some more girlfriends or pay for a stud when my little girl is old enough. I bought her for breeding from a different breeder.

His test results have come back from Langford today to say he's PKD normal & PKDef normal (breeder had not done any tests on his parents) and he is being tested for HCM on Friday.

Thanks for your time.

Keeping a stud cat is not easy. It is often a lonely life outdoors, as it is usually impossible to keep a stud cat indoors due to the smell and the noise.
Some reading

Have you bred before? If not, I think it would be easier to pay a stud fee for your queen and get used to that before adding a stud into the mix.

Hi Elaine. That's another question in the mix. I read that info the other week. From the point of visiting queens, that's not the plan, he's just for his own ladies. He's such as sweetie & I don't particularly want him to be outside on his own, I will try to keep him in the house if at all possible. I've seen something about some sort of jacket thing to stop them spraying in the house, but I need to look further into that. I'm in the process of ripping out the laurels & rhododendrons at one side of the garden, to build a run for them both so they can play safely outside. He loves wandering round the garden, but at the moment he has to have his harness on & be on a lead. There is plenty of room to make two separate runs if he's going to be used as a stud & to add accommodation for him/both of them for if that's needed. I am planning to keep my little girl in the house but with access to an outside run.

Hi 7Deadly$ins. No I haven't bred before. I've only been involved from when the queen is already pregnant. I adopted two rescue moggies a long time ago & they were both pregnant.
If I hadn't been such a sucker for a pretty face (& the heart shape on his thigh) I would have bought a queen instead of him, but I fell in love with him at first sight, he's just so gorgeous I couldn't resist.
So now that he's here I want to check that there are no common factors in their pedigrees or illnesses in his, that will prevent them from mating.
I am quite happy to neuter him & pay stud, fees if that is what's best for him.

Thank you both for your advice :)

Well I haven't got anywhere with researching Valentino's pedigree, so I can't be certain that he is bringing the right genes into the mix. There's something that just doesn't sound right somehow but that could just be me having a suspicious mind. With that in mind as well as him possibly having to move outside I've decided to have him neutered & find a stud as & when Xena is ready. I'll be able to find her the best possible stud at the time and keep my little darling Tino in the house, he makes a great hot water bottle :D Just got to wait now because my vet will not neuter before 6 months.
Thanks to Elaine & 7Deadly$ins for your advice as you've both helped me come to the right decision. :)

I do find it a bit odd that you weren't given the pedigree at the same time as the contract when you took him home, I'm tend to be put off by people who sell kittens and say that they can be put on the active register for more money too. Personally I feel that if a cat is breeding quality then it should either be sold as a breeding cat at breeder price or marked down and sold as a pet for pet price. For me the option to pay extra for active registration later gives the impression that the breeder is only interested in the money and could potentially get away with fooling customers into paying extra for a pet quality kitten to be active registered.

I think given the circumstances that you have made the right choice, stud boys are hard work mine has just started spraying and it really does STINK  which means he can't come and hang out in the house properly any more and has to stay in his (easily washable) cat room now much to his disdain

Have just spent what feels like 2 hours composing a reply that wouldn't cause offence to anyone & I've lost it
So here's a quick & shortened version:
Hi Lollo & Jenda
I've had a look on TICA but can't (so far anyway) find any mention of when you should get the pedigree papers. I only found a bit that says registration slips should be sent when the breeder has received confirmation of neutering/spaying.
I didn't get a contract as such. I've just had a look & I've got a letter saying what he cost & that the vet has to send proof of neutering including his microchip number before they will send his pedigree. I got an advice sheet on arriving home/kids/other pets/feeding, & the petlog registration.
In all fairness the breeders didn't actually say "you can pay extra to put him on active later" Because the advert had said "can be put on active" I contacted them after I'd had him a couple of weeks & asked if it was possible.
They had quite a few kittens so I guess it was one advert that covered everything.
Tino was very well socialised & is a happy healthy little chap. He was out purring, playing & cuddling the night I got him home. Although it was the day after before he went near my 2 kids. He wasn't even fussed about the dog & made friends with her long before he made friends with my moggy.
I don't want to sound as if I'm coming on here as a newbie & criticising someone, because that's certainly not what I intended to do, I just wanted to try find some information.
I'm very happy with him & my decision to neuter him. He's come to help me type now  so I guess I'd better say goodnight.
Thank you both for your advice & comments :)

Have you ever kept an non-neutered male inside? It gets pretty pongy and they spray just about everything from your bedding to your shoes, even if he got into your wardrobe.......and it's not an easy smell to get rid of, they will even spray you. I'd say paying a stud fee is a lot easier on your part but that's up to you.

You should have the pedigree papers when you purchased said kitty.

Don't worry if he makes you feel guilty about the snip, they are good at laying on the guilt trips
