It think it's because the alternative to buying a pedigree kitten is to get a non-pedigree one for free.

There are always tons of free kittens in the local classified ads but I've never seen a puppy for free.

For anyone who lives in the country or who knows someone who owns a barn, cats are a dime a dozen.

I think it's also because it's not that common, at least around here, to have a pedigree cat. Most people just have a "moggy". It's much more popular and to have a pure bred dog which makes it more socially acceptable to spend more on a dog.

Hmmmm...I just think the only thing you can conclude about a person who asks if price is negotiable is: they are wondering if price is negotiable.

How do you know that they aren't going to buy quality food unless you ask them specifically? I shop at an expensive holistic pet store and pay probably, three times more for food and litter than the average cat owner. I asked about price when I bought my boy.

How do you know that price is the most important thing to them unless they tell you that specifically? You don't.

I can see, turning someone away who is being a jerk about price. No one wants to deal with jerks or people who are completely unreasonable.

On the other hand, if there are enough people who want to buy a kitten from you, why wouldn't you sell it to the person who will pay what you are asking. But then...someone could accuse you of being only concerned about money! Isn't the purpose of breeding to improve the quality of the breed?

You just can't conclude that the more money someone has to pay for a pet initially, the better they will care for it.

I have a feeling that some of us are going to have to agree to disagree:)
