I am worried about undigested rice sitting in the digestive tract of kittens providing a great media for infection to grow. Especially when kaolin is being given.

My Mum was advised to feed fish and rice for a poorly tummy - the result was total pebble dashing of the kitchen and surrounding area and it came out just as it had gone in -

I've been told to feed white rice and chicken for diarrhoea on the basis that it takes very little processing and therefore doesn't irritate the digestive tract. I wonder if it's some well meaning vet simply repeating the advice that is often given to humans.

Years ago when i had my moggie cat he was very poorly vets advised me to feed him on boiled chicken and rice... he was also on some bland prescription food with was chicken and rice. In the space of 6 months he cost me nearly £1000. He was misdiagnosed as having FIP and when i took him to another vets for a 2nd opinion (after being told to have him put to sleep) and they found out he had worms and giardia....

Anyway, i'm digressing... i have been told that several times in the past and by lots of different vets...!

Horatio, I couldn't agree with you more.

lollo2304, the same vet who advised rice etc. apparently decided against sending stool samples alledgedly before hitting the kitten with all sorts of IM and SC medications.

In my cats and kittens I insist on stool samples if the vet is going to prescribe antibiotics for a runny tummy, to prevent missing something like giardia and worms. Often I take pooled and fresh samples so the likelihood of picking up anything is increased. I do this as I had a poorly cat who had diarrhoea that would not stop despite treatments. He is fine now.
