Carry on feeding the same food as he was getting at his breeders initially. The change of home is very stressful to a kitten so you do not want to add further stress by changing his food. It could result in upset tummy and loose stools.

We used RC Kitten 36 initially as the breeder used it, but once that ran out I went to the vet and bought some RC Young Male dry food especially for young male cats who had just been (or about to be) neutered. It's a vet exclusive thing and was £16 for a great big bag (£4 off). Ended up cheaper than the kitten 36 anyway with the nutritional advantages of it too. Supposed to make then nice and lean after the neutering rather than make them go fat. The vet recommended it and our two seem to love it. That's always down for them with water. They also have Whiskas kitten pouches which they also had at the breeder and we've kept them on, and also small tins of Applaws food which they also go mad for. On Friday they love their steamed fish. We use frozen boneless fillets from Iceland.

I also used Royal Canine 36 for Nibbler, and she's just over 5 months. I checked out all the nutritional information and it seems to be fairly good, with high protein content and low carb content - so if you're going to feed dry I'd recommend this.

Nibbler hasn't been spayed yet, so I may look into changing this for after she has. However, their website recommends amounts according to age in months and so if you roughly stick to these it's unlikely your cat will gain too much! I also supplement with Whiskers pouches (not kitten, given she has a kitten complex dry food adult wet seems fine.) I also let her have raw chicken wings - GREAT for her teeth and keeps her occupied for half and hour and more.

Basically I recommend you find a dry food that has a good protein content (search other threads and online for this) and is affordable to you - buying large bags online cuts cost. Supplement this with pouch food and the occasional raw (if has bones) or cooked meat treat!
