Hi All-

I'm getting my 12 week old Bengal boy in a few days. I've been determining what I'll be feeding him and I've decided on trying Primal's Raw freeze dried food. I just bought the turkey (hope he likes it), and I also bought the Buffalo Blue Wilderness Kitten dry food.

My plan is to feed him the Primal food in the mornings (before I head to work), while leaving some dry Blue out for him during the day. When I return from work at night, I'll give him more Primal. I'll basically always have the Blue dry food out for him. When I'm home on the weekends I'll feed him more Primal than 2x a day depending if I feel like he is hungry.

Does this seem like a reasonable plan for a 12 week old Bengal kitten?

Any advice on those brands is also appreciated.

Welcome to our forum! In the beginning, you need to keep him on the SAME food the breeder has him on. Note that just taking a kitten from a mom and siblings and moving him into a new home, new smells, new humans can be extremely stressful. You add a change in diet and it can go downhill fast. You also need to continue the same type of litter and litter box the breeder has been using.

Once your kitty settles in, you can transition the diet and litter box, but this may take a few weeks. Please do not attempt to rush things. The important thing is your baby settles into his new surroundings. You will need a lot of patience as this can take a few weeks.

It's awesome that you are researching this stuff and planning, but you are getting ahead of yourself imo. You can't fall in love with any particular food yet because you don't know his preferences! And make no mistake, there's a really good chance that whatever you buy now you'll end up tossing out, it doesn't pay to try to force something he doesn't like on a cat.

My experience (which is only one datapoint) is that all three of my cats hate primal, and they do like blue wilderness to various degrees depending on the flavor (love duck, like chicken, and are "meh" about the rest).

Anyway, what Sheri said about keeping the food the same for now is good advice. It's cool to research different foods and such now for when you transition him, but buy as small of quantities as you can.

We even have our little Aiko on the same wet and dry food the breeder uses and she wont eat biscuits at the moment. I think that will change as she settles. Also within 5 days we have discovered she prefers fish to chicken in the wet food haha. Glad i only bought small amounts :P

I did ask the breeder for the litter but they didn't tell me the exact type, just that shes been using the cheapest at walmart..

As for the food, she said shes sending me home with some raw food. She said I can feed them raw or Iams hairball (assuming they eat both right now). I'm picking up some Iams hairball dry food so hopefully he eats that and then I can transition in the primal (hoping he likes it of course..!).

Interesting. When I picked up Quasar he had been eating a homemade raw formula as well as Iams hairball formula at the breeder's. She sent me home with a small bag of Iams and I bought Nature's Variety Instinct Raw frozen food for him. At home, I offered both to him, thinking the dry food would be good to free feed, so that he wouldn't go hungry. Turned out he never touched the dry. I ended up giving it to my dog. He's been totally raw fed ever since.
