Just a little FYI for those of you whose cats are on salt restricted diets: I have spent many hours researching online for wet food without added salt. Many hours were wasted looking up ingredients then when I got to the pet store and read the label on the cans it would be entirely different.

Here's what I found so far: Almost everything has salt added to it, even some raw foods! A few I've found that don't are:

Soulistic: Some varieties do, some don't
Weruva: Nearly all don't have salt added
Wellness: No salt added but has sodium selenite way down the list
Tiki: Oddly enough, the newest version does. If you can find the cans with not so neon labels they don't list added salt.
Primal Raw and Primal Freezedried: None that I've found!

Feel free to help me out with this as I'm sure my boys are tired of the same thing over and over!

My problem is the print on the can is so tiny, I can't always read the ingredients. Salt is essential to humans to balance the electrolytes. Know that sodium is important to cats as wel. It's one thing to keep the level of sodium down, but if you eliminate it completely, you are going to have problems.

"What is Electrolyte Disturbance? When certain substances are excessive or deficient in your cat's blood, the body may not have what it needs to maintain muscle function, wakefulness or cognition. An electrolyte is a positive or negatively charged mineral dissolved in your cat's blood. Maintaining electrolytes within a defined range is important is important for brain, kidney, muscle and heart function. If electrolyte levels fall above or below the healthy range, your cat may exhibit strange behavior. The symptoms of electrolyte disturbances in cats can be scary for cats and their owners. Changes in breathing pace or rhythm, changes in heart rate, muscle weakness and seizures are few severe manifestations of electrolyte disturbance in cats. If you observe the sudden onset of these symptoms in your cat, contact your veterinarian immediately for a chemical panel. Understanding the condition of electrolyte disturbance can help you and your vet make decisions regarding your cat's treatment. Symptoms of Electrolyte Disturbance in Cats Symptoms of electrolyte disturbance in cats vary depending on which electrolyte is out of balance. Sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, phosphorus and calcium must be kept in balance to promote the optimal function of your cat's digestive, neurological, muscular and cardiac systems. The symptoms your cat exhibits could indicate one or a few of these electrolytes are out of balance. This can manifest a confusing cluster of symptoms, so it is important to visit a qualified professional immediately if your cat exhibits one or more of the following symptoms: Increased thirst Changes in color or amount of urine Muscle weakness or paralysis Anxiety, depression or confusion Changes in breathing rate Changes in heart rate Anemia Seizures Loss of consciousness Lethargy Since there are many electrolytes in the bloodstream, there are many types of electrolyte disturbances in cats. Only a veterinarian can draw blood to determine which electrolytes are out of balance in cat and how to treat her.

Interesting you posted this now. Ziwi Peak is undergoing a slight change in their recipe & one of the changes in the wet food is: "Removal of Agar and TSPP"

TSPP is in their canned food right now (in their old packaging)- it is labelled on the can as "Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate". A google search revealed that TSPP is an edible phosphoric salt that is considered safe for human consumption. But it has been taken out for any Ziwi Peak cans with the new packaging/branding.

Interesting that they will be taking this out in their wet food, but then they are planning on adding New Zealand sea salt to their air-dried food, when it had no TSPP in it before. Kind of confused about this.

If you go for Ziwi Peak though, be prepared- it might cost you an arm and a leg (or maybe donate some organs). Miko loves the Beef flavor and he's shown good interest in the Venison&Fish but they are discontinuing it so I've stopped buying that one. They will be introducing another flavor instead called "Lamb & Mackerel", so that will be interesting to try although I do avoid feeding too much fish.

Good luck finding something!

As per the majority of feedback and recommendations I found online, they recommend raw meat for Bengals. This way the cat will consume natural food not contaminated with processed food, preservatives, additives... etc. And it's far cheaper than canned food and dry food.

I highly recommend you consider that option, and do your research.

I had wondered if salt was a necessary part of their diet.

I tried raw food and even making it myself ended up being more costly than buying wet food not to mention time consuming. I still feed it to my boys once in a while.

The dry food I feed them has salt. I dislike feeding them dry but if I don't my boys act like they're starving.

I give them two 3oz cans to share daily now and add half a can of water to each meal.
