Raw diet might be an attractive option, since it is lower cost, and potentially top quality, but it puts a lot of burdon on you though, to essentially become a catfood manufacturer. It's not something that should be done haphazardly, or half-way, because doing it wrong (meaning not getting the balance of ingredients right, or not taking the proper food-handling precautions) could be disastrous. Make sure you do the research before embarking on that journey.

If you want to stick with commercial foods, I think you're actually doing a decent job by alternating between blue buffalo dry and canned. Wilderness is indeed better than the "regular" Blue Buffalo, but they are both pretty good. As far as canned goes, I would say buy as much as your budget allows. I don't see much point in mixing pumpkin in, all that's doing is diluting the meat content, and also throwing off the ingredient balance (upping the carbs, lowering the protein etc., which seems counter-productive). So I wouldn't do it.

I think what I would do if I were in your shoes is to make a list of the really good canned foods, and then keep a watch out for sales. You can also usually save 20-25% or so if you buy, by the case (but make sure your cat loves it before doing that!) I shop at some places around here that allow you to "mix an match" different flavors and still get the "case" price.

There are some other good ones that are in the same price range as Blue Buffalo, like Merrick's and Wellness. One food that I just starting buying recently that has excellent ingredients and is a bit cheaper than the other "premium" foods in its class is Earthborn Holistic. They seem to be doing a lot of promotional stuff right now to gain awareness, so you might be able to find a deal. They make dry food as well, which you might want to check out. I think it's definitely a step up from Blue Buffalo, in terms of quality.
