How old before they can eat bones

Hey All,

I am new to the forum and have a 6 1/2 month old Male bengal called Freddie.

I would like to transition him from raw chicken breast (he also has royal canin kitten) to chicken wings with the bones. Is he too young to eat the bones or do you think he will manage?

I tried to find information about age online but couldn't really see anything.

Your help is much appreciated.

If they can't eat it they won't. As long as the bones aren't cooked your OK. Don't forget supplements with chicken breast.

The first time I gave Benji a chicken wing I was looking all over my flat for it as I thought he had dragged it somewhere.

....but he had eaten every last bit of it! :eek:

You may need to slit the meat a bit so he realises it is food and not a toy and he will probably throw it about a lot too!

I give Quasar the chicken wing segment that has 2 bones. Because they are finer than the drumette bone, he will eat the entire thing. The drumette bone always has a little bit of bone left behind, I presume because it is larger and denser.

I take a cleaver and whack the 2-bone segment into about 8 pieces. First I hack it lengthwise to separate the bones, then crosswise to form 4 pieces out of each bone. Cutting the wing into smaller segments helps prevent him dragging it all over before he eats it. There is still some mess but not nearly as much as when I have left the bone whole.

Quasar has been eating wings, bones and all, since he was about 4 months old.

That vid is fab! It amazes me how they can eat bones. It terrifys me though the thought of it not being chewed properly and getting stuck in their throat - what would you do if this happened? I am desperate to get mine on raw at some point but i amso scared of the bones!

I hope your kitty enjoys his chicken wings as much as the one in the vid!

Ok so just an update... He took the meat of almost instantly and is slowly chewing on the bone. Seems extremely happy with his new food addition!!
