breeders who HCM screen?

Well, with the amount of denial and court cases going on regarding HCM and other genetic defects, I don't think that things are about to change any time soon sadly.

I do feel for pet owners especially though. They deserve honesty from a breeder at least. I would hope that any breeder who homes a pet kitten or a breeding kitten will be at least responsible enough to offer a replacement kitten and/or refund should they lose that kitten/cat from any genetic disease, and regardless of the age of the kitten/cat too. It's a no-brainer really.

A lot of breeders are your best friend when they want a kitten or a kitten sale, but as soon as the money is banked the word 'responsible' seems to disappear from their vocabulary. Whether or not a breeder screens, if they are worth their salt, they should remain responsible for the health of their homed cats for their lifetime. Simple as that, and there shouldn't be any excuses if you truly care about the breed and the owners who home your cats.

Back tp serious-- I learned of HCM when I met Katie (Obi's mom) back in 2008. I was horrifed and wanted to learn more. But I was diverted by the need to learn about FIP.

I also wanted to say that I understand that starting a screening program is a process. I do believe it can't happen in a cattery instantly but that untested cats should not be bred. This doesn't have to put a halt to your breeding program.

Breeders that work together on this get it done.

Your whole program doesn't have to DISintegrate if you find that your breeding cats have HCM---IF you have INtegrated your program with that of another breeder. Then there is always a plan B.

You have homed a kitten from a breeder and the kitten/cat dies suddenly from a (possible) genetic defect. It doesn't matter how old the kitten/cat is, and you may or may not have had a post mortem carried out.

I know replacement kittens/refunds would be the last thing on your mind for a good while, and you may not even want either, but what would you expect from your breeder regarding support?

Would you expect the offer of the choice of a replacement kitten or a refund or both? Would you expect your breeder to stay responsible as they are after all, the one who is responsible for their cats and their offspring in the first place?

I apologise if this is going a little OT, but in light of recent disputes I'm interested to hear views from pet/breeder owners on this.

Personally for me, I would move mountains to ensure that any owner was happy, so I would offer a refund or a replacement without question and irrespective of the age of the cat.
