Hello everyone,
I'm new here and I'm considering adding a purebred cat to my current collection of moggies. I thought I had narrowed my choice down to either an ocicat, cornish rex, or oriental shorthair, but I have decided to also consider a bengal because I have always loved the way they look.

That said, I am posting here to see what your thoughts are on the bengal breed, as a whole, in comparison with the C. Rex, Ocicat, and Oriental.

Specifically, how much more active are bengals than the other breeds I'm looking at?

Also, one of my main reasons behind getting a pure bred is that I want a friendly, outgoing, and very affectionate cat... I have read that bengals are not as affectionate (except for the rare lap cats), is this true?

the majority of bengals are very outgoing, playful, intelligent, social & friendly...the odd one may be aloof & not so cuddly, but in general they are lovebugs.
as with any cat, you get out of them what you put into them & it depends on how they were raised with their breeder too.

i can't really compare them to other breeds as i have little experience of them, but if you go along to a cat show you can see them all & chat with their owners. also, go to a few breeders of each of the breeds, meet the cats in their home environments & discuss all the things you would like to know. it's worth visiting more than one breeder of each type, as you may see differences in the cats' personalities depending on their home environments. it sounds like a lot of effort & very time consuming, but believe me it's worth it to ensure you make the right choice for you.

hopefully this will help you decide which you will go for. i hope it's a bengal!! but then i'm biased

I suppose every cat has their own personality, and you could get what you think is an "Affectionate" cat, and find that it isn't. By the same token, you could get one which isn't naturally affectionate, but appears to be so.

Our new 2 bengals are crazy when they're playing and if you pick them up to put them on your knee they're straight off. But yet when they've had their fun and want some relaxation, they'll jump on you and sit there for as long as you want. It's quite a nice surprise really!!

Like the others have said, bengals are VERY energetic cats and quite naughty. Just make sure you don't mind that sort of thing if you consider getting one. When being bad, my boy would even mouth off at you while running around still excited when being scolded. Which of course made me laugh.

He was extremely affectionate, but not a lap cat. It made the rare moments he'd curl up against me under the covers that much more precious though...

3 weeks with our lovley snow leopard bengal girl and all of the above is true, we had a chocolate asian smoke before and find the traits very similar, smart cats that if handled well when reared become true companions and people cat, I cant speak for toms as both of ours have been girls.
