Hi,
I'm sure i have found the perfect breeder & perfect kitten to breed with, and of course to have as a loving member of the family. The only worry for me is that the mother of the kitten had only two kittens. Is this hereditary to have such a small brood?

My Raiden came from a litter of three. He has a brother and a sister. A first litter can produce as few as two kittens. Ask the breeder if this was the first litter. The number of kittens in the litter will usually increase with each pregnancy. I am a member of a bengal Facebook page and one on there just had seven kittens!!!

Litter size can vary tremendously. Quasar's mum had a litter of 9 one year prior to having him. He had only one other littermate and was a kitten from mum's last litter. She went for spaying the same time he and his bro were neutered.

I guess it's really "chance" as to how many kittens are in a litter! I think the fewer for the mother to feed and care for would be healthier in the long run. Usually in really large litters, kittens have to be bottle fed to supplement the mom. There's no way she can feed them all properly. I wouldn't worry about taking a kitten from a small litter -- as long as that's all that was actually birthed from the mom. If you get TICA papers, it may have on there how many kittens were in the litter, however that may reflect only those that survived. I think the breeder would be up front with you if you asked why there were only two kittens in the litter.
