Hello everyone!
I'm looking at a specific kitten now (15 weeks, girl), but I was just wondering if it's ok for me to change the name after I buy it? I know that cats learn to respond to names, so would my changing its name confuse it too much? Should I just keep with it's original name, or will my giving it a new name not really matter?
~Thanks!

I think it's common for breeders to give their kittens temporary names. Like when I picked my girl out she was called something else. I named her Sarabi but soon started calling her BB! She is still a tiny baby and BB didn't respond to her name until about six months! I think she would adapt to anything you call her.

Call your kitten whatever you like :)

Mine don't know their names, I think I would have to actually spend a lot of time training them before they understood. They do come to call - but they come to the tone of my voice, not the words I'm saying if you see what I mean.

To me it's not only ok, but mandatory  Part of the fun of getting a cat is giving them a name that means something to you. A lot of breeders "get" this, and will actually ask you for the cat's name, and will then call it that as it is growing up, before it's ready to leave.

Oh defo :D

My cats where Sherpa - now Poppy
Orianna - now Saffie (Saffron)
Joe stayed as Joe cuz I liked it :D

One I bred myself started out as Tula - ended up as Sausage thanks to lady who bought her brothers. One of them I called Mr T cuz his ped name is Ain't No Fool - but she changed it

- The only thing I was ever 'mean' about was picking the pedigree names for them - cuz I like to do themes, so for example one litters dad was called Greatballsofire - so kittens were RocknRolla, Big Bopper & Tutti-Frutti - Tutti stayed. And the other two were re name Buddy (Buddy-Hollie) & Louis (Louis-armstrong) :D

As i breeder i pick out their pedigree names but i choose not to give them pet names. I do this to protect myself mostly so i do not get attached to them. I encourage new owners to pick their names early on so i can start using it. I refer to the kittens by the colour of their identification band.

Pick their pet name, it is your right! But we do need pictures

I picked both my bengals' names.

Oscar's official name is Washington (as his breeder names them after States, I got to pick which State), Ella's is Isabella (which I picked as they wanted something longer than Ella).

Ella responds to her name, Oscar less so.

Of course you can, they will have their birth names, for paper purposes but you can call them whatever you want.

The breeder of Pixel and Widget asked us if we had names in mind. We already knew what we were going to called them so she registered them with their names and started using them before they were picked up. :)

We were got our family dog many many moons ago he was registered with a name that the breeder gave him: "Seaxa Sovereign" but he was always going to be "Ben". So the breeder registered him with one name (to match whatever system he had for naming his dogs) but referred to him as Ben before we took him home.

It's quite common for cats/dogs to be registered with one "official" name but be given a different one by the new owner.
