I just bought my first bengle kitten, which I have wanted for 2 years now. I finally decided it was time to dump the girlfriend and get the kitten. It just made sense! Not sure whose mouth runs more though at this point :D

Anyways, the Bengal I got is 9 weeks old. He looks grayish in color but has a tanish around his face, down his back and on his paws. Still in his fuzzies too. Is it possible that he will eventually turn to a tan kitten? Or will he remain grayish?

I'll try to get a picture posted.

Thanks!

Not sure without a picture.

9 weeks is a little young to leave it's family. Were you told what colour your kitten was? Do you have any registration papers or pedigree?

Yes... I thought so too. I didn't think they leave until about 12 weeks. The papers say charcoal.

As you can see in this picture, he has a cream tan on his head and its showing along his back and his feet as well.

Any ideas?

from my own experience with Tigger and Nala who were both quite light coloured kittens, their fur has gotten darker with age. Tigger was pure white at 8 weeks old and now has black hairs shot through his white as you can see in my signature. Nala was a very pale almost champagne colour when she was 9 weeks old and now has darker brown (copper with glitter) hairs along her flank. Although the sides of her belly are still quite light coloured, she has definitely gotten darker overall though and she's now 16 months and 3 weeks old

I don't think he looks very Charcoal in that picture.

Were you given any papers or a pedigree when you got him?

No... I am in the United States. And yes, I am now aware it was a little soon for the breeder to let him go. But these are all irrelevant points to my question.

I was simply wanting to know if he will possibly stay this color or will he turn more of a tan or what. I am reaching out to those who have seen these cats change as they grow as this is the only kitten I have had.

Thanks.

What papers do you have that say she is Charcoal?

As I said before, she doesn't look charcoal in the picture you have posted. Do you have anymore pictures you can post? Charcoal cats have a rather distinctive faces. Charcoal kitties come in different colours. You can get a charcoal brown, charcoal snow etc.

We need more pictures in order to help you.

Looks brown spotted to me. My Kirby actually has a lighter color background on his body (like your kitten's) that looks almost silver... but the background on his head/feet are light brown. He's currently 4 1/2 months old and still looks that way. I classify Kirby as brown spotted just because he doesn't have that really dark streak along his back that most charcoal Bengals have.

EDIT: Here's a pic of Kirby taken about a week ago. Although I'd say the background of your kitten looks even more brown than his.

Many bengals with strong, black expression are very grey in their basecoat colour initially. Over time, their basecoat colour enrichens. These kittens mature into good strong spotting against a pale golden or rich red basecoat.

It is not entirely uncommon for breeders in the US to let their kittens go as early as 9 weeks old. Many prospective owners want very young kittens not realizing that it's not in the best interest of the kitten.

Your kitten does not look like a charcoal to me, however, that doesn't necessarily mean that your papers are fake, just that your breeder possibly made a mistake. He looks like a brown spotted to me.

I've wanted a Bengal ever since I gave up the first one I had 10 years ago. Somehow, I got one that wasn't properly socialized and I've been researching them since. Even after all that I didn't realize that 9 weeks was too young to leave it's mother. I learned that after joining this forum. And...I'm not stupid or uneducated.

Your new addition does look more like a brown spotted, although a bit like ours... Stash was described to us and on his registration papers as "charcoal," but I'm beginning to doubt that. Charcoal is a difficult concept to understand, even for someone who has done all their research. His breeder thought he might have been a brown or even a silver charcoal, but at this point I don't know what I'm supposed to be looking for as indicators of either! Yours' face is much more tan - Stash has almost no brown on him except his nose (the pictures make him look more warm-toned but he is in truth a mix of gray and white hairs with black rosettes). We didn't get him for color, though, and he has turned out to be the love of our lives! Congratulations on the kitten. :)

The first two pictures are him now, at about 4 months, and the third is at 3 months. I haven't seen much change in coloration in that span of time.
