Ok, 13 weeks. So around the middle of April. I even have been dreaming of kittens lol Oh the waiting is hard!

Yes I can see that it would cost breeders money. She has said "Oh, you can do those 12 week shots yourself if you want, and take him a week or so sooner..." and I guess that is why.

But I said I would wait til the 12 week shots and then at least 5 days. I felt like I could hear her sigh as she read it lol But she did not argue it.

In the meanwhile, we will continue preparing our house and stocking up on supplies

The main reason some breeders let their kittens go at 9-10 weeks is because sometimes people will put down a deposit on a kitten then change their minds at the last minute leaving the breeder scrambing to find a home for the kitten. As the kitten grows older it becomes more difficult to find a home because most buyers want the younger kittens. Sure, it costs them money to keep them longer but not all breeders are greedy for money. They just want to make sure their kittens find homes. I personally know one breeder who will give away a kitten to a good home before she'll take the chance of never finding a home for her babies.

ETA: I meant to add to this and my girls got to yakking so I was distracted- lol.

As for the right age for the kitten to go home- I do understand that the longer a kitten stays with it's Mother and siblings the more well-rounded it will be. I understand that it's better not to be taken to a new environment before the second set of shots. I will share with you a true story that happened to a new kitten parent just last week. A few girls chipped in and adopted their very first kitten to be shared between them. They planned to keep it at the vet office where they were employed as techs during the day and they would take turns taking her home at night and on the weekends. Against her better judgement the breeder let them have their kitten before she had her second set of shots. She probably thought the kitten would be fine at the hands of skilled techs. They all should have known better. Because the kitten hadn't yet built up enough immunity she contracted something most likely from the vet's office and died a couple weeks later. That and the added stress of being shuffled from one home to the next. A very sad, but preventable tragedy.

Most ethical breeders will hold your kitten for you. Just reassure them that you will follow through with the adoption.

Ok you stepped into a deep subject I got my bengal when she was 10 weeks and she is PERFECTLY fine , never had problems with her litter box habbits , eating, drinking or any other problem for that matter. The only thing is that I would wait at least three days before you get the kitten after it gets its shots because they can have a bad reation to the shots! If you do get the kitten early make sure you keep it in a safe room for about a week with its litter box food water toys, anything it might need and visit frequently just to make sure you dont have litter box issuse and the kitten doent get overwhelmed by to much of a new thing. Also be sure to check vet records from the breeder and take the kitten to your vet asap or with in 72 hours of getting it to make sure its healty!

Another thing to since the kitten will not have its second shots as mentioned before you have to be SUPER careful about what the kitten is exposed to. No going outside until shots becareful at the vet to make sure its not exposed and so on , just be super careful as you would with a newborn baby. I wouldnt even let visitors go into the room with my kitten until she had all of her shots!

I don't know about saving too much on the cost of vaccines. If you take the kitten to the vet, yes, but if breeders give the shots themselves it's about $5 per kitten. My breeder gives her kittens shots intranasally(sp?). Having learned what I have on this forum and through the experiences of others I would be the kind of breeder to keep my kittens longer, too. I'm not judging anyone who got their kitten earlier than 12 weeks. I'm just saying I wouldn't want to take the chance of something happening to one of my kittens. For that matter, I'll leave breeding up to the experts.
