I don't know what the average is. We did adopt our girl Rosie from the breeder, she was a queen. She was just over 3 years old.

It depends the reason for retirement, some may only be about only a year old, if they do not make the grade or are infertile. Some have had one litter and some have had many litters and are a bit older, it just depends. The Bengal is a fast breed, breeding cats usually spend little time with breeders as they want the "next big thing" and will buy it or use the offspring to breed with.

I do think it depends...

Some girls may be the most fantastic mothers and we suitable for having more litters then others. Or some girls simply dont enjoy it - although maybe some would still use them, I however would not. But then again I also dont and wont rehome my cats (unless in their best interests) so I probably wont be breeding for very long

I would say under 4-5years old from what I have seen personally.

I wasn't sure. I know when I used to be a persian fan that people bred them up until 5 years + all the time. We did get a couple of retired persians that spent many happy years with us.
When looking into Bengals it seemed like we found several that were being retired at between 2 and 3 years old. Which to us is still a young cat. We didnt know if they were just being bred to death with back to back litters because of how popular the breed is now days. Or if that is when most retire them. Moving on to the next generation makes since.

We are going to look at a girl this Saturday. She is a nice brown spotted with lots of color and big rosettes. She is two years old and just weaned her second litter. Her breeder's reason in rehoming her is because they are moving more into snows. She only carries for brown spotted, no snows or even marble. We can have her for the cost of an exam and spay ($150) She has always had free run of their house except for when she was nursing babies. Any red flags? or anything we should check into or question? Thanks for your help.

Check her pedigree against the HCM positive list. I have heard that some breeders retire their cats from high risk lines early before HCM shows up. Sorry but it's certain breeders who are cynical and I am not as trusting as I used to be.

yes, it is becoming an increasingly used tactic..

Breed from very high risk blood lines, then farm out the breeding cats to pet homes at 2 years old before they are likely to screen positive for HCM.

Breeder can then truthfully claim they scan for HCM, but at the same time know full well there is a very small chance they will ever have a positive screen despite using high risk lines.

The bargain price might not be so attractive IF you end up with a HCM cat 2 years later

Not saying this IS the case, they may be telling you the truth - stranger things have happened - and even if they are not it does not mean the cat definitely will have HCM, but it is a risk to consider.

Oh, and you will be faced with exactly the same dilemma with a full price kitten unless you are very careful where you buy from.

Personally I would be much happier to home an ex breeding cat which is 5 or 6 years old than one which is 2 years old
