Kitten no longer required!

We have a new addition to the family. She is a lovely black kitten, not bengal but beautiful nevertheless and full of mischief. My desire for a melanistic bengal kitten couldn't warrant the premium I would have had to pay for a black bengal cat so I had to compromise either rosetted, snow or bengal cross.

Is it because of the new pantherette breed that mellies have become more expensive than any other colour/type? Or could it be that they are just so rare people desire them?
Either way i'd love to read your views.

I'm surprised that breeders are selling melanistic Bengals for more than the recognised colour Bengals. I homed my mellies for considerably less than the average Bengal price.

When I started out breeders sold non-standard colour Bengals for much less than the standard colours, so I'm not sure why suddenly these Bengals are being sold for not only the same price but even more? They certainly aren't as sought after as a rosetted Bengal for example in my experience.

I'm quite shocked at this, perhaps breeders justify their prices by putting the 'rare' tag on these cats. As beautiful cats as they are, I don't agree with charging a 'normal' price for them let alone a higher price.
