So my Gypsy Bengal loves eating her hard food but I wonder why she will always eat towards the far edge of her bowl where she will actually bite the edge each time trying to get food? Is she having a hard time seeing her food? Is her bowl too small? Too big? Just strange. She will also push a lot out of her bowl like a dog trying to get at it?!

There are many types of bowls for feeding pets. They are inexpensive, so I might try a different type. Mine always make a hole in the bowl smack dab in the middle an they are great at pushing the food out onto the floor, too. Some kitties just have quirks.

My two kittens do the same thing, about pushing food out. Though it's not usually that the push food out, but rather that they shake their heads when they come up from a bite which flings the food everywhere. End result, though, is that they're messiest eaters EVER. I've also noticed that they eat differently than any other cat I've ever had: they open their mouths open WIDE and shove it into the food, rather than picking out a few pieces. It always reminds me of trying to bite off a piece of meat, rather than the small little kibbles they have. If my bowls were smaller, they would be biting the edges of the bowl while trying to eat using that method. Maybe it's just something in the way they eat?

It's just a cat-thing. Imagine eating your breakfast without using your hands :). I'd probably have it all over my shirt, and all over the table and onto the floor if I attempted that.

Thing is, I’m not a newbie on cats. I used to rescue them, so I’ve seen a lot. I’ve never seen other cats eat in quite the same manner. It’s... hmm, exaggerated? ... with the bengals. Not complaining, I was just surprised

For messy-eating kitties, check out the Neater Feeder. The food basically stays inside the feeder and excess water goes down into the base. It saves my floor, although I have a separate dry food bowl and the pieces are always on the floor around the bowl.

Thanks for the tip, I may get one! Right now I have my water bowls in bins to catch the spare water. Though they don't play in the water so much as run full-tilt into the bowls, sloshing water everywhere.

Neater feeder rhas different sizes, different heights, for dogs and cats. You can order extra bowls. I absolutely love mine. Raiden eats out of it more than my DSH, but both are pretty messy eaters! LOL

There is a new theory about this - called whisker fatigue. Most bowls are small enough to push on the cat's whiskers and this can bother cats the point that they won't empty the bowl.

I have some flatter cat dishes that I use for wet food. The whiskers do not come into play at all. Dry food goes in deeper bowls and I have used wider ceramic bowls just for that reason. Raiden doesn't have many whiskers as trey have been torn off in fights. He prefers a smaller bowl.

Raiden's whiskers were torn off in fights? Oh my, poor baby!

He has a couple on the sides. The ones above his eyes are gone! His previous owner lt him roam free and Raiden went looking for fights. All his vet visits the first six years of his life were for abcesses from violent cat fights. Raiden is pretty scarred up and he has a torn ear from one battle. That's why he has a large cat enclosure on our deck and I walk him on a harness and leash twice a day. However, he STILL got into a fight last September which resulted in his not being able walk on one of his paws for a month. My poor baby!

Thomas used to dig in the bowl for the last pieces of dry food and flip them onto the floor, or eat them out of his paw. Other treats I would put on a plate anyway.
