My friend has a young male Bengal approximately a year old he is pretty big was neutered just after I got him for her as a rehome in January, after they lost their lovely little female in October last year. After being a house cat until January, he loves the space and freedom of his rural home, he is sociable and very friendly, plays with the household Labrador and the dog across the road (who used to go mad at cats) He is pretty fearless and discovered the delights of rabbit hunting this spring, clearly enjoying his accomplishment and bringing home 'snacks' for the lab!

However, my friend had a neighbour two fields away knock on her door and request that she keep her cat in as it was chasing the neighbour's chickens. My friend was completely taken aback - but was able to say that she didn't think she could do that. She is now very nervous about him going back and doing some damage - ie killing one or more. He is probably just playing but my friend doesn't want to find out...... On reflection she realises she should have said they could take any action they wanted bar, hurting the cat, but didn't think at the time. Any suggestions - as to how Zig can be persuaded not to play/chase/eat chickens - gratefully received.

Honestly, there is no way to teach a cat not to be a predator. The only way I can think of is for both parties to come together and devise a barrier method of some kind that would repel the bengal cat away from the chickens.

I do wonder, tho, how the chicken owner is protecting her birds from other predators such as local cougars or hawks. If the bengal cat is the biggest threat to them, maybe she already has some measures in place.

Easy... have your friend raise chicken. This way the cat won't go two fields away to chase someone else's. ;)

Ok, now seriously:
1) first of all your friend shouldn't allow the cat to go outside unattended for the cat's safety before anything else.
2) there are electronic ultrasonic repellants in the market that can be installed to limit the cat's movement within a certain parameter. Check Amazon.com

Chickens should be in a chicken coop surrounded by wiring. You can't expect a cat to ignore chickens or birds at all for that matter. While your cat has every right to be outdoors, he should not be in your neighbor's yard, so I might suggest building an enclosure or cat proofing your yard. If the chickens were to come in YOUR yard, they would be fair game for your cat, but in order to co-exist with your neighbors and not have some bad blood between you, you've got to commandeer your cat to stay in his own yard. Easier said than done unless you limit his access outside your yard. Obviously, your neighbor has the chickens for eggs or food -- for them, not for your cat!
