Cant keep cat off counter tops

Interesting Matt. I tried some of the same (less extreme) measures. Until I found what is now my approach: own it! Embrace it! I have two badass, rebellious "pirate" cats, who thrive on chaos, mischief and fun. When I see them doing particularly outrageous and naughty, rather than getting all uptight and upset about it, I run for a camera. I even wrote/filmed a short film for film school about naughty outrageous cats. And I get no end of entertainment from them.

Cats and counters go hand in hand. Mine jumps up while I'm preparing his food. That's it! But I have had cats on the counters for decades and I've not found a way to keep them off. I would pick them up and place them on the floor. Jumping is what cats do and they love being up off the floor -- cat trees can help solve the problem. But, if you're in the kitchen and you have a bengal, that bengal will probably be in the kitchen with you. I know people who have moved a cat tree into an area of the kitchen and the kitty just wanted to observe and was happy to just lay on the cat tree.

If jumping in the counters is the worst thing your bengal ever does, you are lucky! :biggrin:

I wrap my arms around the kitty on the counter and give them a bunch a big kisses on their neck and hug them. Then they spring out of my arms like a jumping bean and run away off the counter, lol.

Katniss counter surfs and sink surfs, it's just one of those things. She knows we don't appreciate her being there, so when she jumps on the counter and she sees me approach, she either comes down or lays herself low as she knows I'm going to get her. It's funny when she is in the sink, she goes really really low thinking I can't see her.

We have a chair in the kitchen where we put her when she is on counters, it used to be the tall kitchen bin, but now that she is bigger she manages to knock it down when jumping off it. Loud bangs frighten her, so I avoid putting her on there now. Off the counter, on to the chair, reward with a treat. Maybe one day she'll stop, maybe not. Wet wipes are always available and there is never any food left out.

Regarding ssscat, we tried it too. Katniss finds it hilarious. She literally sat in front of it, letting it spray on her, moving her head up and down, walking around it, didn't scare her one bit and ran a whole canister out in a few days. I might actually get a refill at some point, only because she thinks it's a game and seems to love the puffs.

Miko is a smart kitty. Blondie and Grace have never gone up on the counter by the stove and sink. They don't know that they can jump up there so they stay on the island with the barstools. It's pretty funny because they recently learned if they jump on top of the outdoor grill, they can see what's going on out to the road and that is a foot higher than the counter. One day they will figure it out and I will be in trouble. I doubt they are just being obedient.
