Mine do this too (not the soap) - especially with the fleecy blanket I've got on my sofa and the throw on my bed. I'm not sure how much of it they actually ingest or whether they just like picking at things. I'll certainly be interested to hear what your vet says.

i have heard of this before, both soap & materials & if i remember right it is something to do with a deficiancy...do a search on the internet & see if it comes up with anything

I went to the vet yesterday, and as I promised, here is what she had to say:
It's difficult to know for sure. It can be early weaning (which I don't think it is in my case), or when the kitty was young, she had a stronger need to nurse than normal, and littermates didn't allow it. She said it can be really difficult for the breeder to notice that because it's very subtle.

She also told me that's there nothing to prevent it, apart from hiding things that she is prone to chew on. And it will more likely be a permanent behavior...
