Please could you tell me how to go about this, and also which medium to use, as right now Pushkin has a choice of silicon grit and water and hasn't been to either yet, he has just been holding it in for the past eighteen hours.

He's eating and drinking today, so that situation can't go on forever.

Do you mean training him to use a human toilet or training him to use the litter box? If it's a question of litter type: Do you know what the breeder used? My cats have proven to be rather resistant to any change in litter type.

he obviously really hates both.. if you wanted him to use water you have to ease him into it with a litter he LIKES first, using a toilet training method..
i have no idea what he will do though, he will probably opt to 1. pee somewhere else, or 2. reluctantly pee in the silicone litter.
so you'd better be careful he may develop a bad habbit with #1.. i suggest getting a litter he likes

What litter did the breeder use?

It might be best to stick with his old toilet training habits for a month or so until he really settles in before introducing him to the new and exciting world of the flushable water machine.
