Petting vs thumping - they seem to LIKE thumping

Once when I was petting and rubbing and giving Oberon skritches, I started to pat him. At first lightly, then vigorously. It sounds like I am thumping a drum. He loves it!

I think it feels like a massage to him. It feels odd since I think I look like I am hitting or beating my cat, but he seems to crave the stimulation. Has anyone else discovered this?

I find my domestic shorthair likes it too, but a bit milder.

I sometimes give Oberon what I call "forced loving". I pick him up and love on him while he meows pathetically in protest like a teenage boy embarrassed to be hugged by his mom.

I just picked him up and thumped him while I held him. He seemed to enjoy it without so much as one pathetic yowl!

I've always patted my cats, although I guess I'm not really aware of doing it. Raiden gets full massages from my husband. He even jumps up onto hubby's lap for them. My massages are not that good, so I don't get the lap treatment. The only time Raiden ever got on my lap was when he was a visiting cat and I think he just wanted to impress me to give him a home. I also can't pick him up for any length of time before he gets antsy and fights to get down.

Yes - our previous bengal loved to be 'thumped' on the sides - weird!!

Oberon is so fond of thumping these days he now comes sits next to me and demands it. He gets upset if I stop.

A bonus is that if I pick him up for some "forced loving" and start to thump him, he almost relaxes in my arms. If I stop even for a second, he squirms and jumps out of my arms.

You are obviously "thumping" in the right place. It probably feels like a massage.

Thumping, rubbing the wrong way, our littlest loves it, it's disturbing how much pleasure she elicits from it... As soon as she sees us, she falls on the floor sideways and asks for it... I feel used! 0_o

I tried it with mine and he doesn't like it. He wants a soft tummy tickle and a nice shoulder massage. LOL

Cats in general love getting a massage. I do it for one cat who has muscle spasms, the other gets jealous.

Both of ours get tummy rubs and massages and it makes ME jealous!!! LOL

That's like burping an infant. Or patting. Thumping to me is with your index finger and thumb. LOL. Well, Oberon obviously LOVES it.

lol... thought I had a weirdo but apparently other bengals like it too! My first bengal LOVED to be "thumped"... she also loved to be spun around on chairs and sit in boxes and have them be dragged around like a race car. Adrenaline junky I tell ya!
