Hello all. Having troubles keeping my Bengal away from human food.
It’s particularly difficult with two kids. I leave food for my toddler at the table and
turn my back and she’s sniffing or picking at it. I have been taking her off the tables
and counters to try get her to understand I don’t want her there. But nothing works..
currently just ate my sons muffin from off his plate. I did expect this type of behaviour because I do read a lot of topics off this site. But it’s becoming slightly frustrating for me, I contstantly have to watch food. Does anyone have any experience successfully detouring their bengals away from human food?
I feed her three times a day with wet food and have started putting dry food out as well.
But Chili is very persistent in hunting for anything she can find. And has even become sneaky.
Any advice is appreciated.

Either you posted a similar topic or someone else did! Very simple. You feed Chili when you are feeding your children. Feed her most favorite food in the morning. You may find Chili is a grazer and wants to eat a lot of small meals during the day rather than just 3 feedings. I give my bengal all he wants to eat and he still can't gain weight!

Another alternative is to simply shut her away in another room while your family is eating!

Day 1) four Bengals jump up on the table repeatedly at dinner time. Each one gets scuffed, looked in the eyes, told no (stern voice) placed on the floor.
Day 2) same as day 1.
Day 3) each bengal jumped up once
Day 4) one or two didn't bother at all
Day 5) none bothered, they just sat and watched
Day 14) only a couple of 'attempts' since day 5, same actions taken.
Forever after) they just don't care, they don't even wake up to pay attention anymore.

However. As soon as my knife and fork are put together on my plate (usually because I finish eating before Mrs x) theres a chorus of meows because they all know that now it's 'their' dinner time.

And people say you can't train cats.

As I've always said, patience and persistence are key. You definitely want to nip this and any other undesirable behaviour in the bud asap.

What worked for us may not work for you, but it's an example of what can be achieved with a little effort.

XplosiV, I need you at my house!!! Raiden knows what the word "no" means because he talks back to me every time I use it. He just doesn't care, so I need someone who can actually get him to mind! This morning on our walk, all he wanted to do was walk up to neighbors' houses, which is a big NoNo. We stay on the edge of the street and he can spray all the shrubs that are there. It's not good enough for him. I have to tell him "no" at least 50 times. Maybe it's because I can't stare into his eyes and let him know I mean business.

I have found I can train cats as long as I'm watching, as soon as I turn my back they take an opportunity. My Akira tries to steal Onyx food and as long as I am in the kitchen she won't try and will just wait to lick the plate when he is done. If I leave the room for even a second she goes for a mouthful. Very opportunistic critters!
