I tried to upload some photos from my iphone for the first time last week. In the past I've taken pictures onto my mac, photoshopped them a bit, then ftp'ed them to my webserver, and then when creating a message here, just putting in the "img" links to the photos on my server. It's kind of a laborious process, but it works. So last week I got lazy, and simply wanted to post some photos, right from my iphone, without all the additional steps. So I encountered what others have been complaining about for some time... the dreaded "file too large" messages.
So here's how I got around that (hopefully this will help others). The problem is that the photos coming right off the phone really are too large. In fact in terms of pixels they are really massive! My phone takes pictures at 2448 x 3264 pictures, which is about 3x the size you'd want for a forum. Hint: if the larger of the two dimensions is under 1,000 pixels, you are good to go!
So I searched the app store, and quickly found a bunch of different apps that will rescale images. I got one called "crop-size", I think it was $2 or $3. It works really simply, you fire up the app, you click "load", it shows you your on-phone library of pictures, then you simply click the ones you want to re-size, then select "resize", then tell it how large you want them, and it creates smaller versions of the pictures (it doesn't mess up your originals!). It can do them in batch, so you just specify how much you want to scale one down, then apply it to the others. Then when you post your message (from your phone), you just "attach" those resized pictures that you just made, and ta-da, works like a charm!
Hope that helps... Feel free to ask questions if you have trouble.
